Our most recent Fine Art and Contemporary Art auctions in April and May 2008 seemed indicative of a number of issues. First of all, it is clear that the art market is becoming increasingly segmented: while there were overlaps, it was clear that our bidders today are "decided" in their tastes. Secondly but perhaps more importantly, collectors have become more and more selective in choosing the pieces on which they bid. Rather than going for more lots at a certain budget, they seem to target less pieces allocating a higher budget to ensure that they get what they want.
Observing these issues vis-à-vis the opportunities to sell a select collection of important pieces as well as many other interesting artworks, we decided to present an auction featuring a combination of Fine and Contemporary Art in a single auction day. Keeping consistent with our idea to cater to segmented markets, we divided the auction in two separate sessions back-to-back (Fine Art: lots #001-069 and Contemporary Art: lots #101-178). Each session offers less than 80 lots of artworks that we have carefully selected from the submissions we have obtained during the preparations for the auctions.
In this auction we feature Hendra Gunawan's Mother and Child with Papaya Seller (lot #027) as our cover piece. It is a splendid work by the Indonesian master that comes from the collection of a highly regarded professional in the indonesian business circles, who acquired the piece without any intention of regarding the acquisition as an investment let alone as a tradeable object that he would buy and sell. Only having been exposed to the gentleman's immediate social circles, only very few —if any— collectors in the Indonesian art circles have had the opportunity to see the painting previously. As very few paintings by Hendra Gunawan of this quality have appeared in the market, bidding on this lot is a rare opportunity to acquire a great piece by the master.
While we offer paintings by the famous Indonesian painters Djokopekik (lot #009), Widayat (lot #032 & 067), and Trubus Soedarsono (lot #035 & 038), there are also many other beautiful paintings that are not to be missed. Salim Martowiredjo's Umbul Lambar Turun (lot #035) and Sodhick Ardhani's Oleh-oleh dari Pasar are paintings that are distinctly Indonesian Indonesian in flavor and presented using each of the artist's unique personal artistic style and palette. Those are just a few among the wonderful artworks that we present in the Fine Art session of the sale.
Works by Indonesia's Contemporary Artists are offered in the second session. The most prominent among them present artworks that are politically charged, such as can be seen in Dede Eri Supria's Sosok di antara Beton (lot #133) Tisna Sanjaya's Berpikir dengan Dengkul (lot #149), Dadang Christanto's Pembangunan (lot #151) and Diyanto's Ikrar di Balik Layar (lot #171). Other equally famous artists choose to engage in more personal explorations, whether personal like S. Teddy D's To be Family (lot #172), or artistic such as Ugo Untoro's Symphony No. 5 (lot #165) or Jumaldi Alfi's Pleasure I & II (lot #173 & 174). Many other interesting humorous and serious pieces by younger, up and coming Contemporary Artists are also featured in the sale.
By featuring a smaller amount yet select lots in each session, we hope to present a more exclusive offering and a pleasant afternoon sale on Saturday, 9 August 2008. I hope you do indeed find that the auction more enjoyable! See you then!
