Even since early on in the history of Indonesian art collecting, Indonesian Fine Art has always been the darling of Indonesian and Southeast Asian art collectors. Although a couple of years ago it did suffer from a brief period of neglect as collectors joined the Euphoria of Contemporary Art, in the past year we witnessed that collectors returned to embrace the art that they love most once again. Indeed, Indonesian Fine Art tells the story about the development of our social, political, cultural and artistic identity, and as a relatively young nation, art plays an important role in our nation-building.   Due to some recent rifts with neighboring countries, Indonesians have experienced a kind of rude-awakening about their cultural identity. Many have become aware of the country's rich heritage, and fine art is also a significant part of this heritage. Indeed, Indonesian Fine Art has taken part in forming the nation's cultural identity, emphasized by President Sukarno's formidable art collection. Just as Sukarno's collection stemmed from a modest personal collection, more and more Indonesians realize that they too can start building their very own modest personal collections as part of this renewed awareness of our nation's culture.   Appreciation for art does not usually happen instantly in museums and galleries, but it often involves a long process that starts at home. This is the reason why it is equally important to develop private collections at home as it is to develop grander national collections for museums.   For our Fine Art auction this time, we are offering a selection of very special pieces. As usual, many of our offerings have been sourced from private collections that have not previously appeared in public viewing. The intention of placing the pieces in our auction is to find new collectors who will provide new homes for the wonderful artworks, so that they can share the art with their family, friends and acquaintances who visit their homes.   Perhaps the most interesting lot in our auction this time is an early painting by Affandi, dating from 1949. Acquired by the current owner's husband from Europe, the piece is documented in a rare compilation of the artist's works and writings on the artist published in 1976. It seems to have been painted while the artist was making his way —for the first time— to Europe. This was a period of time when the artist experienced hardship which can be immediately sensed through the manner the artwork was executed. Although life was tough, the artist had a positive viewpoint about life and saw that the hard life also offered opportunities, just as the cat saw the dried fish in the painting.   There are a number of notable works by important artists from the early period of Indonesian art, such as Itji Tarmizi, Agus Djaya, as welll as others who seldom mentioned but actually Sembiring, and Subanto. The adoption of Western abstraction through works by artists of the Bandung school can be seen in the works of Srihadi Soedarsono, Popo Iskandar and Ahmad Sadali.   Works by the first generation of Contemporary Artists such as Dede Eri Supria, Eddie Hara, Lucia Hartini, Entang Wiharso, Astari Rasjid, Agus Suwage and Hanafi can also find in this auction, as well as the works of the younger Contemporary Artists.   We are also fortunate to obtain a nice selection of artworks, including paintings on canvas by Teguh Ostenrik and Eko Rahmy and artworks on ceramics by Suyatna from the collection of a prominent ceramic artist. Three works by Nyoman Gunarsa and a couple of unique watercolors on paper by Antonio Blanco come from two distinct collections. An oil on canvas by Rusli and two watercolors by N.H. Dini, all from the writer's collection, are offerred to lend support to the leading Indonesian writer.   There are many other pieces in our auction that have wonderful historical value. We hope that the lots we offer will catch the attention of some true art enthusiasts  who will be interested in adding them to their art collections. As the money markets have  been soaring and in the mean time the art markets are still experiencing corrections in prices, this is indeed the time to buy! Although you might have started to collect art with financial investment in mind, we hope that sooner rather than later you will also realize that by collecting art you are also investing in our cultural identity and diversity.
