Abas Alibasyah -

Educated at the HIS/Hollandsch Inlandsche School, Abas Alibasyah later joined the Keimin Bunko Shidoso Cultural Center and the student brigade of the army during the struggle for Indonesian Independence. Initially, he learnt to paint under the guidance of Barli and Hendra Gunawan. After graduating from the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI), Yogyakarta, in 1956, he taught at ASRI, IKIP/Teacher's Training Institute, and the Architecture Department at Gajah Mada University. He has been the Director of Yogyakarta’s ASRI; Director for the Arts, Directorate General of Culture, Department of Education and Culture; a member of the National Film Censor Board; and Cultural Inspector for the Department of Education and Culture. He was awarded the Guerilla Star (1959); Cultural Award from the Australian Government (1970); Best Painting Award at the Indonesian Painting Biennial (1974); Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 1984; Art Award from the Indonesian Gov
