Adi Suanjaya "Kencut", I Putu

(b. Badung, Bali, 1994)

Educated at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesian Arts Institute, in Yogyakarta, I Putu Adi Suanjaya "Kencut" is a young artist from Bali famous for his buttonhole puppet figures. Through bold colors and lines, he presents a world of parody through his figures as a form of human reflection today. Kencut presents the subject of doll-shaped creatures with buttons that are presented in the form of paintings, sculptures and installations. It has a characteristic emphasis on contrasting colors and line strength.

The characters in Kencut's works are presented like dolls but are actually representations of humans and their lives. These inanimate puppets show a fragment scene of human life that contains a reflection on the current human situation. He has many solo exhibitions, among others: at Artotel Gajah Mada Semarang in 2020 and at Artotel Sanur in 2019. He has also participated in group exhibitions: including the Intention Please!b exhibition at Edwin Gallery, Jakarta 2020, 2019 Salon at Langgeng Art Foundation Yogyakarta, and Celebration of the Future, ABBC Building, 2019 and Art Jakarta, Rachel Gallery, 2018.


Adolfs, Gerard Pieter

(Semarang, C. Java, 1897 - De Bosch, The Neterlands, 1968)

After having grown up in the Dutch Indies, Adolfs studied architecture in the Netherlands. He returned to Indonesia around 1921, living in Surabaya. He started etching, sketching and painting around 1924. He held many solo exhibitions, both in the Dutch Indies and abroad. He traveled extensively to Japan, Italy, America and the Middle East. In 1940, he settled and spent the remainder of his life in the Netherlands. Adolfs would go through many stylistic periods, from Post-Romantic via Impressionism to Abstract.


Ali., RB

(b. Lampung, S. Sumatra, 1975)

He has participated in many group exhibitions; including: 10 Perupa Muda Chandra Metro, Lampung, 1996; 5 Artists, Velona Gallery Jakarta, 1999; Untuk Kemanusiaan, WTC Jakarta 2001; Jakarta,2003; Tiga Perupa Jakarta, Margo City Depok, 2007; Genta Dalam Warna, Suroboyo Art Centre, 2008; Melangkah Pasti, Hotel Sahid Jaya, Jakarta, 2009. He had solo exhibition Tembang Sunyi, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta, 2016.

He also won an award; when he became the Winner of the Kosgoro Central Lampung Anniversary Painting Competition, in 1994.


Arie Smit

(Zaandam, The Netherlands, 1916 - Denpasar, 2016)

Arie Smit trained at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, and arrived in Indonesia in 1938, as a soldier in the Dutch Colonial Army. He obtained his Indonesian citizenship in 1951. From 1950-1956 he taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). In 1956 he moved to Bali, and he lived and painted there ever since. He has had solo exhibitions in Bandung, Jakarta, Palembang, Balikpapan, Singapore, and Honolulu, U.S.A. In 1992, he received a Gold Medal Dharma Kusuma Award from the Balinese provincial government for his contributions to the development of Balinese painting.


Bagong Kussudiardja

(Yogyakarta, 1928 - 2004)

Bagong Kussudiardja, also a well known choreographer beyond his painterly means, admitted that he learned how to paint from Sudiardja, Hendra Gunawan, Affandi, and Kusnadi before obtaining his formal art education at Indonesia's Academy of Fine Art/Akademi Senirupa Indonesia (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. He participated in numerous international solo and group exhibitions in ASEAN countries, Latin America, Scandinavia, Taiwan, Japan, Hongkong and some European countries. Among the awards he received were Piagam BBMKM (1959), the Gold Medal from the Pope Paul VI (1973), Satya Lencana Dwidya Setha (1975), Gold medal from the Bangladesh Government, and ASEAN awards (1987).


Barli Sasmitawinata

(Bandung, W. Java, 1921 - 2007)

Barli Sasmitawinata is an Indonesian realist painter and is widely known for his contribution for fine arts education in Indonesia. He started to be involved within the art world in the late 1930s and was a member of the “Group of Five'' which included art masters such as Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso and Wahdi. Barli had begun painting in 1935 to fulfill the request made by his brother-in-law to study art in Jos Pluimentz studio, a Belgian painter living in Bandung at the time. Afterwards, he was then mentored by Lugi Nobili, an Italian painter living in Bandung as well. In pursuit of further education, Barli continued his studies of fine arts in Europe. He graduated from the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1950) and Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (1956).

After completing his studies in Europe, Barli came back to Indonesia and continued his artistic pursuits in Bandung. He taught fine arts classes as a professor in the Institute of Technology Bandung and in the University of Education Indonesia. His extensive studies into art positioned him as a well versed and knowledgeable teacher. Sasmita himself has mentored many students that have achieved success and recognition such as Popo Iskandar, Srihadi Soedarsono, Yusuf Affendi, AD Pirous, Anton Huang, R. Rudiyat Martadiraja, Chusin Setiadikara, Sam Bimbo and Rudi Pranajaya. Sasmita’s personal artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally.


Eddie Hara

(b. Salatiga, C. Java, 1957)

Eddie Hara currently lives and works in Switzerland. Eddie Hara's works are included in the Singapore Art Museum, Museum der Kulturen, Basel, Switzerland, as well as private foundations, corporate and galleries in Indonesia and worldwide. Fadjar Sidik

(Surabaya, E. Java, 1930 - 2004)

Fadjar Sidik learned to paint in Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat during the early 1950's. He continued his studies at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI) Yogyakarta, where he also held the positions of Head Painting Department and Assistant Director. From 1957-1961 he stayed in Bali, forming good friendships with Alimin, Widodo, and O.H Supono. He has been awarded Anugerah Seni as Contemporary Painters from the local government of Yogyakarta.


Gunarsa, Nyoman

(Klungkung, Bali, 1944 - Bali, 2017)

Nyoman Gunarsa is a graduate of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, where he was also a lecturer for many years. In 1970, he was one of the co-founders of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia. He has received multiple awards since the 1960s, including the Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya from STSRI "ASRI" Yogyakarta; Best Painting Award at the Indonesian Painting Biennial in 1978 and 1980; Lempad Prize awarded by the Governor of Bali. Gunarsa has participated in dozens of exhibitions throughout Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, U.S.A, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy. He was one of the invited artists at the Art of Bali exhibitions, the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1998. He established the Museum of Contemporary Indonesian Painting in Yogyakarta in 1989, and the Museum of Classical Balinese Painting in Klungkung in 1994. His expressionistic style feature offerings, dancers, and wayang (puppets).


Gusmen Heriadi

(Purwakarta, W. Java, 1926 - Jakarta, 2010)

Education of Government HIS and MULO, then went into Taman Siswa university. Dukut Hendronoto was his 1st teacher, Yazir Marzuki, etc. Then he has got guidance from Basuki Abdullah, S. Sudjojono, Agus Djaya at Keimin Bunka Shidosho and along with that, he learnt in Poetra (Pusat Tenaga Rakyat). And he also participated in “Gabungan Pelukis Indonesia” with a few artists, such as Zaini, Trisno Sumarjo, Sutiksna, Nashar, Suparto, Basuki Resobowo, Affandi, Nasyah Djamin dan Sudarso. At Yogyakarta his participated with “Pelukis Indonesia Muda” which was most of the participated came from ASRI, such as Widayat, Sayogo, Rais Ra'yan, Saptoto, Sidharta and Sukandar. His so active to exhibit at Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Denpasar. His exhibition were organize by “Departemen P & K” at North Sumatra, continent of East Europe, Brazil, India and Singapore. Exhibition for 25th years old PBB in New York.


Hofker, Willem Gerard

(The Hague, Amsterdam, 1902 - The Netherlands, 1981)

Hofker studied at the Academy of Arts in The Hague, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Hofker arrived in Indonesia in 1938, traveling through Batavia, Bandung, Bogor and Bali. He lived in Bali between 1938-1944 with his wife Maria Hofker-Reuter, who was also a painter. During World War II he was interned by the Japanese and put in a camp in Makassar. Some of the works he made there were shown in the exhibition “Nederlanders in Japanese Kampen,” held in several cities in The Netherlands in 1975 and 1976. Hofker returned to the Netherlands in 1946. In 1978, he published part of his Balinese series; Bali Geizen door Willem Hofker, which is dedicated to his best friend Rudolf Bonnet.


Januri

(b. Tuban, E. Java, 1977)

He has received numerous awards among others: Ranked Top Three in the Nokia Art Awards, 2001; Semifinalist for the Philip Morris Art Award, 2000; Semifinalist for the Philip Morris Art Award, 1998. He has participated in many group exhibitions among others: On Women, the Moom Gallery, Jakarta; Human Republic, Mien Gallery, Yogyakarta; Re-kreasi, H. Widayat Museum, Magelang; Age Habition, Edwin's Gallery, Jakarta; International Print and Drawings Exhibition, Bangkok, Thailand; Two by Two, the Bremmer Gallery, Tilburg, Netherlands; and Gawat, The Gallerie, Berlin, Germany.


Jeihan Sukmantara

(Solo, C. Java, 1938 - Bandung, W. Java, 2019)

In 1953-1955 Jeihan Sukmantara studied painting at HBS/Himpunan Budaya Surakarta under the guidance of Sumitro Hendronoto. From 1960-1966, he studied painting at ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology). He has had solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Solo and Surabaya in Indonesia, Rome (Italy) and Paris (France). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Indonesia, United States of America, Algeria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In 1978, he established the Studio Seni Rupa Bandung (Bandung Fine Arts Studio) with Dr. Sudjoko.


Krijono (Fikri Haris)

(Jakarta, 1951 - 2011)

Krijono was born into a family interested and passionate about Art. His father was a collector of paintings and owned the Harris Art Gallery; his mother owned a Batik factory. In 1970, he studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI) Yogyakarta. His artworks are often brightly colored and express his own flamboyant personality.


Lee Man Fong

(Guangzhou, Canton, China, 1913 - Jakarta, Indonesia, 1988)

In 1916, Lee Man Fong's family moved from Canton to Singapore. He began his studies in painting at Singapore. In 1932, he moved to Jakarta where he started an advertising agency and worked as a commercial artist. In 1941, he visited Bali and painted there for a brief period. In the same year he had a solo exhibition in Jakarta. In 1947, he was awarded the Malino grant by the Dutch Governor-General to study painting in Holland, where he stayed until 1952. He traveled widely during those years and held several solo exhibitions. In 1955, he founded the Yin Hua artists association, and served as Chairman. He became a Presidential Palace painter for the former Indonesian President Soekarno in 1961, and he also compiled the 5th volume edition of President Soekarno's art collection.


Lie Tjoen Tjay

(Jakarta, 1931 - 2014)

Since he was child he has like painting. Mangu Putra, Gusti Agung

(b. Sangeh, Bali, 1963)

Mangu Putra graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute (Institut Seni Indonesia/ISI), Yogyakarta, in 1990, majoring in Visual Communication Design. He received awards for the Best Work in Visual Communication Design at Dies Natalis IV (1988) and VI (1990) at ISI Yogyakarta, and was one of the Top Ten prize winners of the Indonesian Art Awards in 1994. He worked as a graphic designer from 1990-98. He has had solo exhibitions in Bali and Jakarta, and has participated in group exhibitions in Indonesia and Singapore.


Mochtar Sarman

(b. Jakarta, 1970)

Mochtar Sarman received his Industrial Design degree from Pasadena Art Center College of Design and worked in Disney for more than 21 years. His trademark industrial strokes and selection of animation and famous icons as a subject of this work derived from his design and professional background. His use of bold color, simple message and often playful composition on his works invites us to celebrate our childhood fantasy and happy memories. He was also known to be the first artist to apply Chromadepth technique in the paintings which evokes an element of surprise once we put the glasses to view his works.

Mochtar also painted on 3D objects such as sculptures packaging boxes, sneakers and mobile phones. He also applied augmented reality technology on some of his paintings, which is again the first artist to explore with such technology. Mokoh, I Dewa Putu

(Ubud Bali, 1934 - Denpasar, Bali, 2010)

Mokoh studied a Balinese wayang style of painting with his uncles I Gusti Ketut Kobot and I Gusti Made Baret, both of whom were central figures in the Pita Maha artists association. He has participated in group exhibitions in Australia, U.S.A, Japan, Singapore, Finland, Holland, Denmark, Germany, and Italy. Mokoh also exhibited at the Venice Biennial in a two-man exhibition with Mondo in 1993, as well as a solo exhibition at the Fukuoka Art Museum (Japan) in 1995.


Permadi Lyosta

(b. Takengon, Gayo, C. Aceh, 1932)

Lyosta attained a foundation for painting at PPM (Perguruan Perusahaan Murid-Murid, Tekongan). In 1947, he became a painter for Penerangan Tentara in Langsa, Aceh, and in 1950, he worked as a painter for the Klise manufacture "Indon" in Medan. He joined Pelukis Rakyat Yogyakarta, together with other well-known artists, such as: Hendra Gunawan, Affandi, Sudarso, Trubus S., Fajar Sidik and Batara Lubis in 1952. He held some exhibitions abroad, such as in Berlin (Germany), Hungary, Bulgaria,Tokyo (Japan), Manila (Phillipines), and Peking (China). He moved to Bali in 1985. He has also organized solo exhibitions at major cities in Java, Bali and Aceh.


Popo Iskandar

(Garut, W. Java, 1927 - Bandung, W. Java, 2000)

Popo Iskandar began painting in 1944 as a poster painter for the information service in Indonesian Armed Forces. In 1958, he graduated from the Department of Art in Bandung Institute of Technology/ITB). He was a lecturer assistant at ITB from 1957 to 1961, and additionally lectured in the Art Department of IKIP/Teacher's Training Institute, Bandung for many years. He held several solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan (Indonesia), the Hague and the Leiden (The Netherlands). He participated in numerous group exhibitions in Indonesia, China, UK, India, Japan, America, Netherlands and Brazil. Popo was also an art critic and essayist of art and literature. He was chosen as a lifetime member of the Jakarta Academy in 1970. He received the Anugerah Seni Art Award from the Indonesian Government in 1980.


Pratomo Sugeng

(b. Ponorogo, E. Java, 1946)

Pratomo Sugeng studied painting under the artist Dullah in 1973 -1979. He has participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta, Solo, Yogyakarta and Bali. In October 2004 he held a solo exhibition in Jakarta. In 2002, he became one of the finalists of the Indofood Art Award Competition.


Rangga RJP

(b. Sragen, C. Java, 1991)

He graduated from The Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta (ISI). Rangga is a conceptual and narrative artist from Indonesia. Each of his artwork is packed with futuristic, imaginative and transcendental portrayals. His work explores nature, universe, science, technology, global cultures, hyperreality, perspectives about future and human complexity as predominant elements which are knit together to create powerful themes. The visual elements in Rangga’s artworks are often bold and surrealistic. Rangga’s art often functions as satirical pieces rich with deep pathos that serve as social commentaries. He has received awards since , 2013 among others; Finalist of GG-IAA (Indonesia Art Award), 2018; 2017 BbuzzArt International Emerging Artist, 2017; Finalist of 35th UOB Painting of the Year category “Emerging Artist”, 2016, Top 20 best Arworks, BentaraBudaya, Yogyakarta, 2016; Featured Special Artist of ”REFLEXE #2”Lenz Die Ausstellung, Germany, 2015; Top 3 Indonesia Panorama Drawing Competition, National Gallery, Jakarta, 2013 .


Rosid

(b. Ciamis, W. Java, 1969)

Rosid first studied Art at SOS Bandung (1989-1991), studied how to paint with Rudy Pranadjaja, Bandung (1994), then attended Art workshops at Bengkel Seni Sunaryo, Bandung (2001-2002). He joined the R-66 studio, Bandung (1992-1993), Redha Studio and Tatang Ganar studio, Bandung (1997-1999).

He held solo exhibitions since 1999, Koong gallery, Gran Melia Hotel, Jakarta, 2000 and Selasar Seni, Bandung, 2002; Segenggam Peduli Studio, Bandung, 1999. He joined group exhibitions among others; Daejon Municipal Museum of Art, Korea and Nadi Gallery, Jakarta, 2003; Soemardja Gallery, Bandung, Edwin's Gallery, Jakarta, Popo Iskandar Museum, Bandung, 2001; Fine Art exhibition, the Nusantara Gallery, Jakarta (1999).


Sadia, Wayan

(b. Penestanan, Ubud, Bali 1939)

He learned painting within his community. At the age of 20, he met Rudolf Bonnet who encouraged him to join Golongan Pelukis Ubud. Ever since then, Sadia’s works had been influenced by Bonnet, especially the illustration of human anatomy. But Bonnet’s influence obviously had been shown in his vision leading him to paint more secular themes, such as the peasant life,market scene and others. He had abandoned the traditional theme since then. His works were illustrated in bright colour, aesthetic figures and elongated deformation found in the figures of animal and vegetation (rice and grass). Aside from Indonesia, Sadia’s works have been exhibited in the Netherlands, Germany, Swiss, Mexico and the United States.


Salim

(Medan, N. Sumatra, 1908 - Paris, Frace 2008)

His familiarity with France culture he shows in creating illustrations for literature books from Lautreamont, Rimbaud, Andre Gide, Paul Valery, Paul Leautaud, Apollinaire Dei. His painting technique is universal, a style that is full of impressionist stream, Ecole de Paris. Among his exhibitions were held in Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, France, Bandung and Jakarta. He had received some awards, such as bronze and silver medals from International Paris-Sud (1971) painting exhibition.


Sudarna Putra, I Wayan

(b. Ubud, Bali, 1976)

In 1994, Putra entered the Fine Art Department at the Indonesia Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta. His first exhibition was held by the Sanggar Dewata Indonesia at the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum (1995), and Taman Budaya Yogyakarta. From 1996-1998, he held several exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Bali and Jakarta. In 1999, he earned an award for Top 10 Artists by the Philip Morris Art Awards, and won the Best Artist of Pratista Affandi Adi Karya.


Sudarso

(Purwokerto, C. Java, 1914 - Purwakarta , W. Java, 2006)

Sudarso studied painting with Affandi, Barli, and Hendra Gunawan. He was a member of PUTERA (Central People's Force) in Yogyakarta. Together with Affandi, they founded Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat, which developed into Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat. He was a lecturer at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. He has participated in exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, Bandung, Malaysia and Singapore.


Sudjojono, Sindudarsono

(Kisaran, N. Sumatra, 1913 - Jakarta,1986)

From 1925, Sudjojono studied painting with Yudhokusumo (the father of artist Kartono). In 1935, he continued his studies with Mas Pringdi and the Japanese artist Chiyoji Yazaki. He received further education at the Taman Siswa Teachers College in Yogyakarta. In 1938, he and Agus Djaja co-founded PERSAGI / Indonesia Painters' Union. From 1942-1944, Sudjojono participated in POETERA / People's Activity Centre and Keimin Bunka Shidoso Cultural Centre in Jakarta. In 1946, Sudjojono formed SIM / Young Indonesian Artists in Madiun. In the 1950s he worked closely with the communist-sponsored cultural organisation LEKRA / People's Cultural Institute, and in 1955, he was nominated by the Communist Party and voted into parliament. His separation from the Communist Party in 1958, saved him from the communist purge in 1958. In 1970, he was awarded recognition in the Arts by the Indonesian Government. His work has been exhibited throughout Indonesia, in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar, the Netherlands, and Japan.


Sudjono Abdullah

(Yogyakarta, 1911 - 1992)

Sudjono Abdullah, son of Abdullah Suriosubroto, is well known as a landscape painter. A graduate of HIS, he worked as a drafter for the Rex Theatre in Yogyakarta, though he also received special order paintings. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, he developed his skill at Parangtritis beach in Yogyakarta. Later, Abdullah moved to Salatiga, where he met with Ho Liong Hwie, who gave him the assistance and motivation that led him to become confident and ultimately famous for his landscapes.


Sujena, I Nengah

(b. Bangli, Bali 1976)

Sujena is a graduate of ISI Yogyakarta. He has participated in numerous exhibitions including the SDI group exhibition at Neka Art Museum (2003). He is a member of the collective Himpunan Seniman Jarak Bang Bangli. He has been awarded on multiple occasions, including the Finalist of the Philip Morris Art Awards” in Jakarta (1998), Five Best Nokia Art Award (1999), as well as the Merit awards from “Nokia Art Awards Asia Pacific” in Singapore.


Tresna Suryawan

(Bandung, W. Java, 1943 - 2007)

Tresna mastered the art of painting as a young child from the direct guidance of his father, the renowned painter Hendra Gunawan. Tresna completed his education at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia in 1962, and in 1964, joined the Akademi Pertamanan (to study garden landscaping) in Jakarta. In 1974, Tresna designed a 30 meter water fall and created an artificial lake at the Indonesian national cultural exhibition Taman Mini Indonesia Indah at the request of Ibu Tien Suharto, the former Indonesian first lady. Tresna has been very active in the art world, and since 1974, he has participated in many group and solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Bali and Japan (with SSIA Japan Indonesia). In 2004, Tresna participated in the group exhibition “Learning By Doing” at the Affandi Museum in Yogyakarta.


Trubus Soedarsono

(Yogyakarta, 1924 - 1966)

During the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), Trubus Soedarsono studied painting with Sudjojono and Affandi in Jakarta. He was a member of the SIM/ Young Indonesian Artists and Pelukis Rakyat / People's Painters groups in Yogyakarta during the Revolution and produced anti-Dutch propaganda posters. In 1948 he was captured and imprisoned by the Dutch for his revolutionary activities. After his release, he became a lecturer at ASRI / Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta from 1950 to 1960. In 1954 he was invited to visit Czechoslovakia on a cultural mission. Soedarsono was later appointed as a member of Yogyakarta's regional government in 1958. In 1966, the artist was killed during the purge which followed the aborted communist coup in September 1965.


Wara Anindyah

(b. Magelang, C. Java, 1969)

Wara Anindyah graduated from Fine Arts High School (SMSR) in Yogyakarta. She continued her studies at the Indonesian Art Institute (Institut Seni Indonesia/ISI) in Yogyakarta, for one year however did not complete her studies. Since 1997, she has had several solo exhibitions in Jakarta and Solo, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Indonesia. Her paintings were selected for a special exhibition of Indonesian Art in Shanghai, China (2003).
