SidhaARTa Auctioneer is presenting prominent paintings of Indonesia by renowned maestros. Celebrated artists in Indonesia, among others such as, Arie Smit, Affandi, Basoeki Abdullah, Hendra Gunawan, Ida Bagus Made Togog, Nyoman Gunarsa, Trubus Soedarsono and Umi Dachlan orchestrate the finale of this November sales. Their artworks are widely known and well-appreciated by art collectors, galleries and auction houses. The paintings signify each artist’s forte and show well-trained skills.
Basoeki Abdullah was a realist and naturalist painter, who received a scholarship from Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag, Nederland in 1933. He completed his study in three year and attained an award from the Royal Institute of Art. He was appointed as the official painter of Istana Merdeka (the national palace of Indonesia) in 1974, and was often commissioned to create paintings, not only for collectors in Indonesia but also in many other countries. His painting in this auction depicts two black panthers, climbing a tree with exotic background of the moonlight. The melanistic black panthers appear backlit in silhouette creating a haunting nocturnal scene.
Hendra Gunawan, Modern Abstraction, 1970, done in oil on canvas. This is an extremely rare and unique abstract work by Hendra Gunawan, who usually paints figuratively. While this is clearly an abstract painting, the artist seems to leave traces of fragmented figures, making people wish to understand what the work represents. Hendra Gunawan was also best known for his combining of traditional Indonesian aesthetics and Western painting techniques.
We also have the early painting by Affandi that shows the maestro’s ability to paint realistically. Prior to developing the well-known pelototan technique, in which he would paint directly with oil colors from their tubes. a style which was later known to be his signature style, he painted using the more common realist technique. In this painting, he painted a portrait of his friend, the artist Lim Kwie Bing who was from Malang, East Java. Lim Kwie Bing is seen here holding not one, but two brushes in his hand. This painting attests to the length of his acquaintance with Lim Kwie Bing, and that he most probably visited him during his travels to Bali. It also tells a lot about the inclusive, multicultural relations artists had during the time.
