Dear Art Lovers & Collectors,
Welcome to our February sales that are reflected through 90 work of art including vintage, and featuring fresh artistic visual renditions by nine emerging artists: Army Herfika, Si Dodi, Yanwar Nugroho, Chasanul Fawaid, Arfi Fiyanto, Prajna Paramitha, Dalilah Salwa, Andrew Boen and Kurt Manzano from Philippines — to begin the auction.
The above followed by artworks by various senior artists of Indonesia; Amrus, Erica, Gung Man, Yunizar, Ipe Ma'aroef, Faizal, Untung Wahono, JB. Iwan Sulistyo, Yani Halim, and Ida Bagus Indra.
One highlight is Rukmini Yusuf, who inherited her talent and artistic sense from her father, Affandi. Her influences are certainly prevalent and identical to her father’s. The sinuous and almost serpent-like strokes emanating from the sun as well onto the valley shows her father’s influences while also attaining her own individuality. The wavering strokes extenuates a life-like quality to the environment, as if the grass and leaves if the forest is moving on it’s own. Another one is by Delilah Salwa, "Soulmate”, Even though a plethora of colours were used in this painting, the two couples that are embracing each other are depicted as absolutely pale compared to their surroundings. It can be said that these two yearn for the warmth of a colourful and verdant relationship, they both yearn intimacy, yet fear it at the same time — both are eager to completely submit to love.
Our future vintage collection shows 19th - 20th century Jun type glazed fish bowl and large Japanese Imari polychrome vase. A pair of late 19th early 20th century electric table lamp with Imari vase stand, and 20th century carved gilt wood Sumatran dressing table mirror with drawers. Also, vintage Chinese wooden lacquered cupboard with soapstone decoration.
The lots are eloquently wrapped up by Indonesian artists who have created trails of inspirations and legacy, such as Jeihan was best known for the black eyes of the figures in his paintings. Initially it was a result of his failure in painting eyes realistically. Finally he decided to color the entire eye black without leaving a trace of white. Later he realized that the black eyes served as a metaphor. The black eyes are interpreted as an attitude of life to not be credulous but at the same time not to be presumptuous of the visible reality. “We, humans, live in the darkness of mystery. We never know what will happen, " explained the maestro. Jeihan suggests his viewers to always keep an open imagination about the things that could not be reached by the physical reach of humans alone through the open eye and to always look deeper and farther. Through the black eyes we should imagine hope and optimism, as a vision we share with the figures he painted.
Sudigdo was a very talented painter who painted realistically. Here he paints a woman dressed in a black velvet dress which is traditionally worn by brides in Javanese weddings. Weddings are usually thought of as happy events, but black is the color of sorrow and sadness. Was Sudigdo merely painting realistically, or was he trying to convey a realistic message about marriage? Here he also paints a man with an athletic body covered in a pink sarong cloth. He wears pink lipstick and pink earrings. It seems clear that Sudigdo not only paints realistically, he was also conveying a realistic message about human sexuality.
Some of the elements in Tresna Suryawan’s paintings, such as his color palette, and the way he forms his figures and the vegetation behind them, are clearly influenced by his father Hendra Gunawan’s works. While the figures in Tresna Suryawan’s painting seem clearly to have come from Hendra’s works, they no longer are Hendra’s. The way Tresna has painted them each as vignettes, was done in a style that is completely his own.
All in all, enjoy our collection and look forward to seeing you at our auction on February 25, 2023. Do come to preview the art and ask for its condition report.
Happy Bidding.
