This painting of a lake in the middle of the woods is by Ernest Dezentje, who
is best known for his impressionistic images. In the foreground, you can see
a person walking on the road surrounded with lush green trees
leading deeper into the woods. The lake and its vastness is seen in the way
he painted the background in great depth. The skies surrounding the lake
are painted in hues of blue, gray, yellow, and purple. The mastery of this
technique can be seen in the way he incorporates similar deeper hues in the
reflection of the water.
Dezentje adheres to Mooi Indie (“Beautiful Indies”), a genre popular during
the Dutch colonial period known for its romanticized images of the
landscapes and everyday life in Indonesia. Colors in this genre bring
serenity and calmness to the viewer.
